Adapting an Automobile
Veterans and servicemembers may be eligible for a one-time payment of not more than $11,000 toward the purchase of a automobile or other conveyance if they have service-connected loss or permanent loss of use of one or both hands or feet, permanent impairment of vision of both eyes to a certain degree, or ankylosis (immobility) of one or both knees or one or both hips. They may also be eligible for adaptive equipment, and for repair, replacement, or reinstallation required because of disability or for the safe operation of a vehicle purchased with VA assistance. Free Driver's License for Disabled Veterans
The Texas Department of Public Safety will furnish a free driver's license to a Veteran who has a service-connected disability rating of 60% or more by the VA. The letter that the VA sends out on a yearly basis can be used to satisfy this requirement. The application must be made prior to the time the current driver's license expires.

Veterans or the next of kin of deceased veterans may use vetrecs.archives.gov to order copies of their military records. For all others, requests can be made using Standard Form 180, which includes complete instructions for preparing and submitting requests.

Veterans/Next of Kin/Other Requesting a Copy of Awards and Decorations
Veterans who have questions on who to contact in case they want a copy of their awards and decorations can go online and make such request. The person making the request can be:
- A military veteran, or
- Next of kin of a deceased, former member of the military
The next of kin can be any of the following:
- Surviving spouse that has not remarried
- Father or mother
- Son or daughter
- Sister or brother
If they are not the veteran or next of kin they must complete the form SF 180.
Disabled Veteran Programs
Clothing Allowance
Any veteran who is service-connected for a disability for which he or she uses prosthetic or orthopedic appliances may receive an additional clothing allowance. This allowance is available to any veteran whose service-connected skin condition requires prescribed medication that irreparably damages outer garments. To apply, contact the prosthetic representative at the nearest VA medical center.
Free Texas Park Admission for Disabled Veterans
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has free admission to state parks for Veterans who have a service-connected disability rating of 60% or more by the VA. An application for free admission may be made at the headquarters office of any Texas State Park and providing the VA letter with your disability rating and your military ID card.
Texas State Hunting and Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has special hunting and fishing licenses, at a reduced cost, for those with a service-connected disability of 60% or higher. Please visit the attached link for information on requirements and procedures.
VA Warns Veterans of Telephone Prescription Scam
Washington (Sept. 17, 2009) - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) issue a press release, warning Veterans not to give credit card numbers over the phone to callers claiming to update VA prescription information.
